Endosymbiosis: Protein Targeting Further Erodes the Organelle/Symbiont Distinction

چکیده
New work in aphids shows that a nuclear-encoded protein resulting from a horizontal gene transfer is targeted to a bacterial symbiont, further blurring the distinction between organelle and symbiont.

Horizontal transmission rapidly erodes disequilibria between organelle and symbiont genomes.
We investigate the generation and decay of interspecific disequilibrium (ID) between organelle and symbiont genomes as a function of the rate of horizontal transmission. We show that rare horizontal transmission greatly diminishes the covariance between organelle and symbiont genomes. This result has two important implications. First, a low level of ID does not indicate low levels of vertical t...
متن کاملEndosymbiosis undone by stepwise elimination of the plastid in a parasitic dinoflagellate.
Organelle gain through endosymbiosis has been integral to the origin and diversification of eukaryotes, and, once gained, plastids and mitochondria seem seldom lost. Indeed, discovery of nonphotosynthetic plastids in many eukaryotes--notably, the apicoplast in apicomplexan parasites such as the malaria pathogen Plasmodium--highlights the essential metabolic functions performed by plastids beyon...
متن کاملShining a Light on Exploitative Host Control in a Photosynthetic Endosymbiosis
Endosymbiosis allows hosts to acquire new functional traits such that the combined host and endosymbiont can exploit vacant ecological niches and occupy novel environments [1, 2]; consequently, endosymbiosis affects the structure and function of ecosystems [3, 4]. However, for many endosymbioses, it is unknown whether their evolutionary basis is mutualism or exploitation [5-9]. We estimated the...
متن کاملEndosymbiosis in Trypanosomatids as a Model to Study Cell Evolution
Some trypanosomatids harbor a symbiotic bacterium, which maintains a close association with the host, constituting an excellent model to study organelle origin and cellular evolution. Molecular data show that all endosymbiontharboring trypanosomatids are grouped together in a single phylogenetic branch. According to rRNA sequences, symbionts of different species are similar, being classified in...
متن کاملRethinking plastid evolution.
How easy is it to acquire an organelle? How easy is it to lose one? these questions underpin the current debate about the evolution of the plastid —that is, chloroplast—the organelle of photosynthesis in eukaryotic cells. the origin of the plastid has been traced to an endosymbiosis between a eukaryotic host cell and a cyanobacterial symbiont, the latter gradually ceding genetic control to the ...
